Think You’re Not Ready to Paddle? Read This First

Do you feel like you need to be stronger, fitter, or have better balance before trying SUP? You’re not alone. Many people either try paddling once and feel discouraged, or avoid it altogether because they think they’re not “ready.”

But here’s the truth: building the fitness, balance, and skills for stand-up paddling doesn’t happen before you paddle. It happens while you’re actually on the water.
Common Myths That Hold People Back:
• “I’ll try paddling once I get stronger.”
• “I need to work on my balance first.”
• “If they’re struggling, I’ll definitely struggle, so why bother?”
• “I tried once and it was hard, so maybe this isn’t for me.”
Why Waiting Doesn’t Work:
Sure, fitness and mobility matter. But nothing replaces the experience of standing on a board and learning your paddle stroke. Land training — balance boards, gym work, core exercises — helps, but it only scratches the surface.
The real learning happens when your body adapts to the board, the water, and the paddle in your hands.
What to Do Instead:
• Get on the water regularly — that’s where skill and confidence grow.
• Pair your paddling with off-water training designed for SUP: strength, mobility, and balance.
• Work with an instructor who can give you feedback, guidance, and the right equipment so you start strong instead of frustrated.
Why This Matters:
SUP is for you — whether you’re brand new or experienced. But if you wait until you feel “ready,” you’ll likely never start. My role as a coach is to keep you safe, set you up with the right board, choose the right conditions, and help you understand body mechanics and paddle stroke from the beginning. That way, you progress faster, avoid unnecessary frustration, and actually enjoy the journey.
A Note on Safety:
There are always exceptions — if you’re dealing with health concerns, pain, or injury, check with your doctor first. Safety and smart progression always come first.
Closing / Call-to-Action:
SUP isn’t about being perfect before you start. It’s about starting now, learning along the way, and pairing your on-water practice with the right support off the water.
